Reliance Jio Technology & Patent Overview: 5G, AI, PCT and Network Innovation

This page is an independent technology and patent-landscape case study based on public sources. It is not affiliated with Jio Platforms, Reliance Jio Infocomm or Reliance Industries. The goal is to show how publicly described technology layers can be mapped to verifiable patent activity without confusing applications, PCT publications, national filings and granted patents.

Reliance Jio technology and telecom patent landscape

Direct answer

Jio Platforms publicly describes a technology stack spanning 5G Radio, Core, OSS/BSS, automation platforms, AI/ML, multi-access edge computing, network slicing, 5G Advanced and 6G research. That breadth matters for patent strategy because telecom portfolios can extend beyond radio hardware into control logic, network optimization, software infrastructure, APIs, IoT and AI-enabled operations.

Two patent-activity figures should not be mixed. Jio states that it has filed more than 6,800 patent applications globally across multiple digital-technology areas. Separately, WIPO's 2026 PCT statistics list Jio Platforms at rank 19 for 2025 with 1,058 published PCT applications, compared with 87 in 2024. Those figures measure different things and neither should be restated as the number of granted patents.

Current patent activity snapshot

MetricPublicly reported figureWhat it means
Jio self-reported global patent applications6,800+Company-reported applications filed globally across 4G, 5G, 6G, cloud-native core, AI-driven network automation and other digital technologies.
WIPO 2025 PCT published applications1,058Published PCT applications attributed to Jio Platforms for 2025 in WIPO's 2026 ranking.
WIPO 2025 global PCT applicant rank19Applicant ranking based on published PCT applications, not granted patents.
WIPO 2024 PCT published applications87Prior-year comparison used by WIPO to show the magnitude of Jio's 2025 increase.

A company can file applications through multiple national and international routes, while a PCT publication represents one international filing route. Later national-phase entries can produce multiple country-specific records from the same underlying family.

Jio's publicly described technology stack

Jio Platforms describes an end-to-end 5G portfolio spanning Radio, Core, automation platforms, OSS/BSS and network services, with deployment options across edge, public-cloud and private-cloud environments. Its technology pages also discuss AI/ML, MLaaS, multi-access edge computing, network slicing, 5G Advanced and 6G.

Technology-to-patent-theme matrix

Selected public patent records illustrate the breadth of technology themes associated with Jio entities. These examples are illustrative rather than exhaustive.

How to read Jio patent records correctly

Record typeMeaningCommon error
Patent applicationA filing seeking patent protection.Counting it as an issued patent.
Patent publicationA published application document.Assuming publication means grant or validity.
PCT publicationAn international application published under the PCT system.Adding each later national phase as a separate underlying invention.
Granted patentA patent issued by a national or regional patent office.Assuming grant proves commercial relevance, validity in all circumstances or freedom to operate.
Patent familyRelated filings connected by priority relationships.Counting every family member as an independent invention.
Assignee recordOwnership or assignment information shown in a database.Ignoring historical names such as Reliance Jio Infocomm when searching a current Jio Platforms portfolio.

Selected family: automatic cell optimization

A public EP3797545 family record concerns automatic optimization of a serving base-station cell parameter. Public records show Reliance Jio Infocomm as an original assignee and Jio Platforms in later ownership data. The family illustrates a recurring telecom-patent pattern: a network-performance invention can move through an international filing route and later appear as national or regional publications and grants.

The example also shows why assignee normalization matters. Searching only today's corporate name can miss older applications filed under a predecessor or related operating entity.

Selected U.S. examples: resource allocation and IoT

US11438757B2 is a public U.S. grant associated with Jio Platforms for a resource-allocation system and method. It illustrates that telecom patent portfolios can protect control and allocation logic, not only physical radio components.

The US20200076896A1 / US10965759B2 family concerns an Internet of Things system and method. Public assignment information shows the matter originating with Reliance Jio Infocomm and later moving to Jio Platforms, again demonstrating why patent-landscape work should normalize entity names across time.

Software and API infrastructure can also be part of the portfolio

The EP3669530 family concerns control of real-time traffic surge of APIs at a server. That type of record is useful because it moves the analysis beyond a narrow assumption that a telecom company's patents are only about antennas, radios or standards.

Modern network businesses combine communications infrastructure with cloud platforms, APIs, orchestration, automation and digital services. Patent strategy can therefore follow the architecture stack into software infrastructure where a technical implementation is sufficiently specific and patentable.

AI and network automation are part of the public technology direction

Jio Platforms publicly describes AI/ML as part of network planning, operations and optimization. Its AI-in-networks materials discuss functions such as NWDAF, RAN intelligence, self-organizing networks and machine-learning-driven automation. Its MLaaS materials also describe model training and application at network-edge and cloud environments.

Recent PCT activity can be used to investigate how that public technology direction is appearing in patent filings, but selected examples should be treated as examples rather than proof that every part of Jio's current patent strategy is AI-centered.

Do not assume Jio patents are standard-essential

A telecom patent is not automatically a standard-essential patent. Standard essentiality requires a separate analysis of the patent claims against a technical standard and, where relevant, declaration information and licensing context.

For the underlying framework, see Standard-Essential Patents and FRAND. A company-specific landscape should use the neutral label “telecom patent” unless there is evidence supporting an SEP characterization.

Portfolio lessons for technology companies

  • Map patents to architecture layers. Radio, core, automation, APIs, IoT and AI can each produce separate invention families.
  • Protect control logic as well as hardware. Resource allocation, optimization and orchestration can be commercially important technical layers.
  • Use PCT data carefully. PCT publication counts show international filing activity but are not interchangeable with worldwide grants or unique inventions.
  • Normalize corporate names. Historical assignees, reorganizations and assignments can fragment a portfolio search.
  • Separate SEP analysis. Telecom relevance alone is insufficient to label a patent standard-essential.

Primary public sources

Patent databases can contain incomplete or changing status and assignment information. Individual legal status should be confirmed with the relevant patent office before relying on it for a legal opinion, transaction or enforcement decision.
